In his new book, Ask the Rabbi: The Who, What, When, Where, Why and How of Being Jewish, Rabbi Isaacs answers many common questions about the basics of Judaism. In chapters dealing with God, prayer, the Bible, holidays, life-cycle events, dietary laws, Jewish denominations and anti-Semitism, he explains our beliefs, ethics and practices. Using a question and answer format, he tackles difficult subjects such as proving the existence of God, and what it means to be chosen. He also explains kashrut, talks about sexuality, and discusses a variety of topics such as why Jews love Chinese food and why there are many Jewish physicians and comedians but few Jewish athletes, and considers Jewish-Christian relations. Those seeking greater depth on these subjects will want to consult sources such as the Encyclopedia Judaica and the books of the late Rabbi Hayim Halevy Donin, but Rabbi Isaacs’ book is a good introductory source for home, school and synagogue libraries.
