Celebrating Brit Shalom is written specifically to meet the needs of Jewish families who are opting out of circumcision. The book offers three original alternative bris (“brit shalom”) ceremonies which can be either family- or rabbi-led. The services are comprised of responsive readings and prayers in English and Hebrew, with transliterations provided. Four newly-composed songs, thematically tied to the ceremonies and intended to be played at key moments during the service, appear as sheet music. (The recorded album is available separately.) The book also includes background information about brit shalom, advice on holding a service, checklist, and glossary. Officiants and parents may choose to order a copy for each person attending — a page at the front is designed to be personalized with details of the event, making the book a keepsake for participants to take home. Created in close consultation with rabbis, cantors, and Jewish thinkers, Celebrating Brit Shalom is a bold new resource for parents — and for rabbis wishing to meet the diverse ceremonial needs of today’s families.
