How do you hold onto love? What does a memory feel like? How do you mourn? A Gift of Feathers answers these questions for young people and grown-ups alike.

When young sisters Talula and Rhea go to visit their warm and wonderful grandmother Dot, she lets them play with her collection of ninety-nine feathers. It reminds her that her parents are watching over her.” Sadly, the next time they visit, they are there for beloved Grandma Dot’s funeral. Afterwards, the girls find two slender white feathers, which connect them to their grandmother and her love.

This special picture book is filled with warmth and wisdom. It may help children process their grief and teach them to make their own traditions during hard times. From the sweet and detailed illustrations of the two sisters and their grandmother’s feather collection, to the author’s final note about his own experience with his mother’s death and a jar of feathers, readers will find great comfort in this book during times of need.

Paula Chaiken has worked in a variety of capacities in the Jewish world — teaching in religious school, curating at the Spertus Museum and fundraising for the Federation — for more than twenty years. She also runs a boutique public relations consulting firm and enjoys reading all sorts of books with her three sons.
