A celebratory sense fills this sweet Hanukkah story which is geared to preschool children. Simple rhymes introduce aspects of the holiday, such as the menorah filled with colorful candles, the eight nights of the festival, Judah Maccabee, the role of the shamash, the dreidel, the food of course, including latkes and gelt, and the wonderful nature of the family gatherings. A two-page glossary following the text explains some of the history and the traditions relating to the holiday. The author is well-known and admired for her previous children’s books, as is the illustrator. Illustrations are fabulously colorful and exuberant, exhibiting almost a primitive nature. They are appropriate for the targeted audience. Recommended for preschool– grade 2.
