Mrs. Honig is the sort of neighbor everyone would love to have. She’s always got some delicious treat fresh from the oven, and she’s never too busy to offer advice, share a story, or just chat. These very short stories from HaModia Publishing, tied together by their summer settings, feature plenty of girls dealing with issues including jealousy, shyness, insecurity, and impatience. As one would expect from writing for children from this publisher, difficulties are always resolved, anyone doing the wrong thing realizes her or her error and repents, and the problems tend to be fairly minor. This collection is likely to appeal mainly to girls from Orthodox families, as almost all the characters are female, and thefrequent use of Hebrew and Yiddish expressions and discussion of Jewish concepts may be foreign to other children. For ages 9 – 14.
Marci Lavine Bloch earned her MLS from the University of Maryland, a BA from the University of Pennsylvania and an MA in English Literature from Fordham University.
